Weather the Storm with Internet from CIB

3 ways to protect your tech during a spring storm

Spring is here – and that means it’s time to prepare for the unpredictable weather conditions that come with the warmer season! Here’s how you can weather the storm and keep your tech safe when you start to hear those rumbles of thunder.

Get a surge protector
If you’re not home when the storm hits, a surge protector can offer a barrier against a lightning strike. If lightning does strike your home, a high-quality surge protector will distribute the extra voltage among other devices to reduce the damage done to your electronics. Remember – while power strips and surge protectors look similar, not every power strip is a surge protector. You might even consider a UPS or uninterrupted power supply instead.

Backup your data
You never know when lightning will strike – and no one wants to deal with the headache of losing photos, documents, and other critical files. By backing up your data with cloud-based storage or a physical hard drive or both, you can ensure that your personal information is protected.

Unplug your devices
This is by far the most effective way of protecting your technology, especially if you know you’ll be out of town for several days. If you are home, be sure to unplug all your devices, including:

  • Personal computer
  • Router/Modem

  • Television

  • Printer
  • Ethernet cords
  • Charging device
